ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has turned down the resignation by Tourism Minister Nilofar Bakhtiar from the Cabinet. The official news agency Associated Press of Pakistan quoted Mr. Aziz telling reporters after the central executive committee meeting of the ruling Pakistan Mulsim League (Q) that he had rejected the resignation. "I have not accepted her resignation." Ms. Bakhtiar could not be reached for comments. She has not reported back to work yet.
Fatwa
The Minister sent in her resignation to the Prime Minister last week upset with the party leadership for not showing solidarity with her against Islamist clerics who had issued a fatwa against her. They wanted her dismissed after newspapers published pictures of her hugging a paragliding instructor following a charity jump in France. She was eased out of her party post as head of the PML(Q) women's wing earlier this month, but the party leadership has been at pains to say this had no connection to Ms. Bakhtiar's parajump or hug. Meanwhile, the resignation by the former Prime Minister, Mir Zafruallah Khan Jamali, from the PML (Q) hangs in balance. The central executive of the party rejected the resignation, but Mr. Jamali did not attend Tuesday evening's session of the CEC, fuelling speculation that he may not change his mind.
