Self-help group in Erode gets power tiller

Collector urges farmers to use new methods in agriculture

ERODE: Erode farmers are hard workers and are obtaining a full crop with minimum water, said collector T. Udhaychandran recently, when he was honouring farmers who had obtained State awards for participation in crop-yield competitions.

Agraharam at a function held at Erode, said that the power tiller, costing Rs 1.20 lakh, was presented to the group under the TANWA scheme with about Rs 30,000 subsidy.

He said that T.K. Kailasam of Bhavani taluk had secured the second place in the State-level paddy yield contest and Bhavanisagar P. Ganesan secured first place in obtaining high yield in groundnut.

The collector said Mr. Kailasam had obtained a yield of 17,035 kg of paddy per hectare on his land, while Mr. Ganesan had obtained groundnut yield of 3,370 kg per hectare.

He wanted other farmers to use modern methods in agriculture and get more yield. Farmers should patronise the organic farming system, as they would get more yield and also produce output that was not injurious to the health of the people. For micro level irrigation, the Government was providing 50 per cent subsidy to farmers.
