8 women among 27 given life term

ONGOLE: Additional District Judge, Fast Track court, A. R. Sampath Kumar, on Friday convicted 27 persons, including eight women, in a murder case and sentenced them to undergo life imprisonment. According to the prosecution, the accused belonging to one group attacked their rival group in Mettavaripalem village of Kondepi mandal on April 21, 2004 and killed a person Kalluri Venkateswara Rao, (23), and injured 10 others. The prosecution examined 19 witnesses including the injured as eye witnesses. - Special Correspondent

Groom, four others killed in accident

KHAMMAM: Four persons of a marriage party, including the bridegroom, were killed in a road accident near Sathupalli in the early hours of Friday. According to reports, the accident occurred as the car carrying the newly-wed couple and their relatives collided head-on with a tanker coming from the opposite direction. The bridegroom, Venkata Sairam, 32, and two of his relatives -- Bhujanga Rao 55 and Tulasammam, 50 died on the spot. The car driver Riyaz died in the hospital while the bride, Peddiredy Vijaya's condition is said to be serious. In another incident, a woman was killed when a car another marriage party met with an accident on the outskirts of Khammam. Four others, including the bridegroom, Venkata Nageswara Rao, suffered serious injuries. - Staff Reporter

Polavaram work recommence

HYDERABAD: A majority of works of Polavaram multi-purpose project, all worth Rs 5,364 crore, have recommenced following the interim order issued by the Supreme Court recently while dealing with a petition concerning wildlife clearance. While recommencing work, the Government has gone by Apex Court's order that work on the project could be taken up in non-forest areas. Highly-placed sources in the Government said the work that has started again includes construction of the main dam, spillway, and the head-regulators of the right and main canals. - Special Correspondent

Three held under Wildlife Act

ELURU: The police on Friday arrested three persons at Agadalalanka for their alleged involvement in fish farming in the prohibited fifth contour of Kolleru Lake in violation of the Wildlife Protection Act, according to Forest Range Officer A. Srirama Murthy. A lorry and an autorickshaw, engaged for transport of fish and feed and a pump set employed for pumping of lake water into fishponds, were seized. -Staff Reporter

Power utilities' move hailed

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Official Language Commission has hailed the fixing of Telugu name boards of AP Transco and AP Genco as success of the organisation's efforts in the implementation of Telugu as administrative language. A.B.K.Prasad, chairman, in a statement on Friday complimented the AP Transco officials. However, he suggested that the name should be `Andhra Pradesh Vidyuth Prasara Samstha' and `AP Vidyuth Utpadaka Samstha'.

Beaten to death?

KADAPA: A firewood vendor Chowdam Ramamurthy allegedly killed his wife Ramalaxmamma after an argument in their house in Nagulakatta street in Jammalamadugu town in the early hours of Friday.

Ramamurthy reportedly hit her on the head with a pestle causing her instantaneous death, Jammalamadugu Urban CI Sriramulu said. — Staff Reporter

Youth murdered

KADAPA: A 24-year-old man Venkataramana was murdered allegedly by a group of unidentified persons near Guvvala Harijanawada in Tsundupalle mandal on Thursday night. He was attacked while he was returning home from his in-laws' house, according to the police. Tsundupalle police registered a case. — Staff Reporter

Kadapa: Minister for Energy and Coal Mohd. Shabbir Ali, who is the in charge Minister for Kadapa district, will address a review meeting on Praja Patham and Indirama in Kadapa on Saturday.— Staff Reporter

Funds sanctioned

TIRUPATI: Maganti Venkateswara Rao, Minister for Minor Irrigation, while participating in the Praja Patham programme at Venkatapuram village in Renigunta mandal on Thursday, sanctioned Rs.15 lakhs for repairs to the irrigation tank in the village. He also sanctioned Rs.9-lakh loans to thrift societies and Rs.70,000 to two girls under the `Girl Child Protection Scheme'. — Special Correspondent.

Dairy revival sought

TIRUPATI: Members of the Chittoor district unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Janasangh held a rasta-roko at `Nalagukalla Mandapam' junction here on Thursday protesting against backtracking by State Government on revival of the Chittoor Dairy unit. — Special Correspondent.

Tourist facilities

Madanapalle: All facilities have been provided at Horsley Hills for tourists this summer, according to APTDC official Prasad Reddy. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, he said that the facilities included APSRTC services from Madanapalle, a swimming pool, medical facilities, street lights, drinking water, toilets, a bus shelter and an SBI ATM counter.

Demand for PG recounselling

HYDERABAD: Candidates from Osmania University who have been "affected" by the counselling for selection of PG courses by the NTR University of Health Sciences met here on Friday and formed an association to fight the "injustice".

In a statement here, president of AP PG Aspirants' Association K.Madhu urged the university to do re-counselling within two days and warned of launching an agitation from May 14 if it failed to act accordingly. — Special Correspondent

Former bureaucrat dead

HYDERABAD: K.Obayya (76), former Union Additional Secretary and member of the Central Administrative Tribunal, died here on Friday. He had also served the State Government as Principal Secretary, General Administration Department, and Commissioner of Industries, Panchayat Raj and Commercial Taxes. — Special Correspondent

Woman beaten to death

KADAPA: A firewood vendor Chowdam Ramamurthy allegedly killed his wife Ramalaxmamma in Nagulakatta street in Jammalamadugu town on Friday.

Walkers' association building inauguration

ELURU: The office building of Prasanti Walkers' Association will be inaugurated at Gandhi Maidan in the city on May 13. Minister for Minor Irrigation Maganti Venkateswara Rao, local MP Kavuri Sambhasiva Rao and MLA Alla Kalikrishna Srinivas will attend the programme.

The building was constructed with the amount released by Mr. Sambhasiva Rao from his Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) funds. - Staff Reporter

HIV treatment centre

ELURU: The Antiretroviral Therapy Centre for treatment of HIV patients will be inaugurated at the district headquarters hospital here on Saturday. Minister for Minor Irrigation Maganti Venkateswara Rao and P. Ramesh, Secretary, Department of Medical and Health, will speak at a function to be held in this connection.

Kakinada: Mayor K. Saroja inaugurated a three-day exhibition of forest produce organised by Vana Samrakshana Samithis (VSS) under the auspices of forest department at Raja tank premises here on Friday.

District Forest Officer Ananda Mohan said 90 VSS were taking part in the exhibition.

A variety of products including honey, soap nuts, broom sticks, Alivera products, vermi compost, tamarind, furniture made of bamboo waste, decorative bamboo pieces, jackfruits and leaf plates were put on sale.
