Students plan blockade
Iboyaima Laithangbam
IMPHAL:
The All-Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) has announced an indefinite economic blockade, starting Sunday, in protest against the Manipur Government's refusal to introduce 50 per cent reservation for tribal candidates for the post of graduate teachers. The blockade will be imposed on the three National Highways, considered to be the State's lifelines.
ATSUM spokesperson Apau Haokip said that though the Government maintained a 35 per cent job reservation for the Scheduled Tribes, the Manipur University did not follow it. Only two out of the 145 teachers and 47 of the 295 non-teaching staff in the University were tribals.
