CHENNAI: Following the attack on Dinakaran newspaper office in Madurai, the police have posted pickets at its office in Chennai, Commissioner of Police Letika Saran said here on Wednesday. To a query at a press meet, she said as a precautionary measure, police pickets have been posted on the premises of Dinakaran group of publications. — Staff Reporter

Subbu expelled from AIADMK

CHENNAI: K. Subbu, advisor to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetr Kazhagam legislature party, was removed from the primary membership of the party with immediate effect, according to a party release. — Special Correspondent

Verdict in bomb blast case deferred

CHENNAI: A designated Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (prevention) Act (TADA) Court, which was to deliver its verdict in the RSS office bomb blast case on Wednesday, deferred it to June 11.

The designated judge, T. Ramasamy, said the order was not ready as there were voluminous records and citations to be considered. On Wednesday, 14 of the 15 accused were present in the court.

Of the total 18 accused, Imam Ali and Palani Baba died during the trial. One Mushtaq Ahmed is absconding.

The August 8, 1993 blast at the Chetpet office of the RSS left 11 persons dead and seven injured.

The case was initially handled by the State police, and later handed over to the CB-CID before being sent to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Charge sheet was filed in June 1994 and the trial began in August 1995. More than 220 witnesses were examined during the trial. — Special Correspondent

Southern districts being neglected: MMK

TIRUNELVELI: The Moovendar Munnani Kazhagam (MMK) has planned to hold a series of agitations in the next 18 months to press its demand for formation of a separate Southern Tamil Nadu State.

Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, founder president of the party N. Sethuraman said the Government was keen on ensuring investments only in and around Chennai. The southern districts "are being neglected for no reason." — Staff Reporter

Award for District Forest Officer

CHENNAI: District Forest Officer, Tiruvallur, S. Kalyanasundaram has been selected for the Indira Priyadarshini Vriksha Mitra award.

The award carries a citation and a scroll besides a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh.

The award was given to him for his contribution towards converting 1000 ha of wasteland into a tree cover with the active participation of local people, implementing various poverty alleviation programmes in three villages besides creating income generation activities for forest dependents.

CHENNAI: The results of the third year MBBS Part-1 (non-semester) Degree Course examinations held in February 2007 of the Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University are available on the varsity website: tnmmu.ac.in, according to a press release. — Special Correspondent

Dance and music

Udhagamandalam: The third Summer Festival of Dance and Music of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (BVB) would be held at the United Planters Association of Southern India (UPASI) in Coonoor from May 11 to 13, according to the Chairman of the BVB, the Nilgiris Kendra, M. R. Srinivasan. It will feature violin, kuchipudi and carnatic music performances.

Coimbatore: Bharathiar University Red Ribbon Club and Dr. G.R. Damodaran College of Science will organise a workshop on `Innovative RRC Show' on May 11 at the GRD College. All Red Ribbon Club members from the affiliated colleges of the university will participate.

Payment of telephone bills

Coimbatore: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has despatched telephone bills dated May 5. Customers have been requested to pay the bills before May 25 at any of the collection centres, post offices or designated branches of Indian Bank or Andhra Bank, BSNL PCO franchisees or BSNL franchises. A release from the BSNL said that customers could opt for payment through electronic clearance service through their banks to avail of one per cent discount on telephone bills.

Coimbatore: The International Society for Krishna Consciousness will organise Gita Interactive Session from May 17 to 23 at Damodar Centre. ERODE: Interview would be conducted on May 11 in the Erode district Employment Exchange for recruitment of candidates to some private institutions.

According to a press communication from District Collector T. Udhaychandran on Wednesday, the exchange had arranged interviews for pharmacists. Candidates having passed D. Pharmacy could appear for the interview.

For the post of customer care receptionists, women with any degree qualification

could appear for interview.

Men office assistants, mechanical service engineers, sales representatives, salesmen, computer operators and electricians would also be recruited.

Eight injured

Tuticorin: Eight persons were injured when a private bus hit another bus at Mullakadu near here on Tuesday evening. The police said that the private bus was bound for Tuticorin from Nazareth.

Policemen suspended

TIRUNELVELI: The Superintendent of Police, N.K. Senthamaraikannan, on Wednesday placed under suspension two sub-inspectors of police (SI), seven head-constables (HC) and a constable. While a SI and three HCs, manning the check-post at Puliyarai were suspended for getting bribe from lorry drivers, a SI, three HCs and a constable, attached to Highway Patrol 3on similar charges. Another HC, Sorimuthu, of Mukkoodal was suspended for injuring a woman with his two-wheeler in an inebriated condition.
