HYDERABAD : For about a week now, the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) has been conducting summer coaching camps at 770 locations across the state in 34 disciplines. Commencing on May 2, they continue till the end of the month and aim to spot talent in children aged between 12 and 16 years. The project costs about Rs. 40,15,000 that includes Rs. 22.69 lakhs towards material, Rs. 7.70 lakhs for organisational costs and Rs. 9.625 lakhs as remuneration for coaches and trainers. In the districts, the collector is overall in-charge, while the actual conduct is overseen by the District Sports Development Officers (DSDOs). Assisting them are physical education teachers and senior players. A ceiling of 35 camps has been set for each district, with not more then three of them for each sport/discipline. Camps are conducted in sports/disciplines that are popular in the region. Depending on the interest in the area some non-conventional sports like yoga and roller-skating have also been included, as are indigenous games like kho-kho and atya patya. In Hyderabad, the following Sports Authority of India coaches were also roped in viz; Yunus Suleman for athletics at GMC Balayogi Stadium, Gloria Pillay for hockey at the Gachibowli astro-turf facility, K.V. Gopala Krishna Sharma for weight-lifting at KVBR Stadium, Yousufguda and V.N. Tiwari for judo at L.B. Stadium.
The sports/disciplines: Athletics, archery, basketball, boxing, cricket, football, hockey, kabaddi, kho-kho, volleyball, weight lifting, handball, judo, sepak takraw, softball, badminton, carrom, swimming, tennis, tennikoit, throwball, roller skating, taekwondo, fencing, ball-badminton, wrestling, table tennis, netball, gymnastics, kayaking and canoeing, atya patya.
Sai Teja wins title
Sai Teja defeated Pranav Teja 6-3, 6-4 to win the men's title in the Wilson League tennis championship organised by Advantage Tennis Academy here on Wednesday. B. Shrrinesh won the boys' under-14 title getting the better of Nikith Prasad 6-2, 7-6(4).
Handball trials
The Hyderabad District Handball Association will organise selections at the Gymkhana on May 10 and 11 to pick the district teams for the inter-district championship to be held in Kurnool from May 15 to 17. Interested should report to the coach at the venue.
Last date extended
In Visakhapatnam, the last date for completion of players' registration of the first and second division clubs has been extended up to May 25, according to the Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association.
