Letters to the Editor
This refers to the editorial "Of Husain, hate and harassment" (May 8). The larger issue is: do artists enjoy unlimited freedom? An artist does not function in a vacuum; he is expected to be sensitive to the beliefs and traditions of the society in which he lives. A responsible artist should anticipate the impact his creations can have on society.
V.N. Mukundarajan,
Something is terribly amiss with our social order. It will indeed be sad if creativity is modulated in tune with the whims of intolerant elements and fanatics. What is the difference between our moral vigilantes and those issuing fatwas against the Rushdies?
