KSEB to evict encroachers

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) will take steps to evict encroachers from its property in Munnar. Electricity Minister A.K. Balan, who visited the area recently, told journalists that the Board's Vigilance Officer Maheshkumar Singla would conduct a probe into it and submit a report in three weeks. Mr. Singla would check the documents of the occupants and further steps would be taken on the basis of his findings. — Special Correspondent

Officials suspended

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: K. N. Chandrasekharan Pillai, K. S. Joseph, George Mathew and C. V. Vijayan, former village officers of Bison Vally, Vagamon and Chinnakanal villages have been placed under suspension as part of the action being taken in connection with the encroachments and bogus title deeds in Devicolam, Udumbanchola and Peermade taluks. - Special Correspondent

Abhaya case: CBI submits report

Kochi: The Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) has submitted a report on the progress of investigation into the alleged tampering of the chemical-examination report in the Abhaya murder case. The report was filed before the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Monday. The court, on November 29, 2006, handed over to the CBI an anonymous letter alleging that the report had been tampered with, and directed the investigating agency to conduct an investigation. — Special Correspondent

Spark form made compulsory

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Spark form no.1 has been made compulsory for those who join Government service. The Spark is a scheme for computerising the salary and service records of the employees. The Heads of Departments have been asked to ensure that new employees submit the form.— Special Correspondent

Safety authority inspects dam

KOTTAYAM: The Dam Safety Authority on Monday held an inspection of the century-old dam at Mullaperiyar to have a closer look at the structure. The visit comes in the wake of the dropping level of water in the reservoir. Speaking to presspersons, Authority chairman G. Sasidharan said the drop in water level had given them a chance to inspect the lower levels of the structure which were covered when they inspected the dam on November 15, 2006 . The damage suffered by the masonry work, the plastering and the structure in general were visible during the inspection , he said. — Staff Reporter

PDP to observe `pratheeksha' day

KOLLAM: The first anniversary of the Left Democratic Front Government on May 18 will be observed by the People's Democratic Party (PDP) as "pratheeksha day". PDP leader Poonthura Siraj told mediapersons here on Monday that on May 18 the PDP would organise "janapaksha" meetings in all districts to observe the day. Mr. Siraj said that reports on the Gujarat fake encounters were shocking and on the face of it, the development warranted a CBI probe. PDP district president Mylacaud Shah was also present.

Ornamental fish exhibition

Kozhikode: The exhibition of ornamental fish being conducted as part of the Fruit and Flower Show 2007 organised by the Kozhikode Horticultural Development Society at the Stadium ground here has been extended till May 10. The fruit and flower show concluded on Monday. Ornamental fish varieties, fish tanks, flower and tree saplings are available for sale at the exhibition venue. — Staff Reporter

Bus owners' bodies not to support strike

THRISSUR: The Thrissur Private Bus Owners Association and the Kerala State Private Bus Owners' Association have decided not to support a bus strike called by the Joint Action Council of Bus Owners' Association here from May 10. In a statement here on Monday, both the associations termed the strike unreasonable. "It has been called by vested interests," the associations said. — Staff Reporter

Marathon march begins on May 12

THRISSUR: District Collector M. Beena will flag off a marathon march taken out by athlete P.M. Narayana Iyer from Thrissur to New Delhi on May 12. The march will be flagged off at Naduvilal here on May 12, according to a press release. — Staff Reporter

Vazhakunnam award

THRISSUR: Peringode Sankaranarayanan has been selected for the Vazhakunnam Memorial Award, instituted by the Bhaktasiromani Vazhakunnam Vasudevan Namboodiri Smakara Samithy. The award, carrying a purse of Rs.7,500, citation and statuette, was decided by a committee comprising Thamarassery Sankaran Bhattathiri, K.P. Achutha Pisharody and V. Sankunnykuttan. The award will be presented at a function here to observe the 51st death anniversary of Vazhakunnam Vasudevan Namboodiri, a press release says.
