CWG 2010: No allocation for athletes' training

New Delhi: Preoccupied with the masterplans that promise to change the capital's skyline, organisers of the 2010 Commonwealth Games have probably forgotten the Indian competitors and a parliamentary committee is baffled that there is no allocation for the athletes' training.

The Standing Committee on Human Resource Development, in its 195th report on Demand for Grants 2007-08 of the Sports Ministry, noted that no separate allocation had been made for the athletes' preparation during the year. The case is same with the 2010 Commonwealth Games, it observed.

"The Committee is surprised to know that funds have been projected/allocated for every other activity such as construction of Games village, stadia, roads, transport, etc. but not for the training of our sportspersons for the Commonwealth Games," the report read.

"The Committee is of the opinion that the Ministry must create a special corpus for the training of athletes for the Commonwealth Games and other such events," it added.

Burden of expectation

It reminded that there would be heavy burden of expectation and a good showing would bring a "change in perception towards sports in the country."

"The Committee, therefore, strongly recommends that every effort should be made for a world-class training of our athletes on a regular basis."

The Committee also found ad-hocism in projection and formulation of estimates.

"It seems there exists no clear schematic guidelines in this regard. The Committee strongly recommends the Ministry to come out with a clear guideline in this regard so that the expenditure on bid process and other necessary expenditure can be met," it said. — PTI
