NEW DELHI: Expressing surprise at the lack of fund allocation for training sportspersons, a Parliamentary panel said the Government must create a special corpus for the purpose for the 2010 Commonwealth Games and other such events. "The Committee is surprised to know that funds have been projected/allocated for every activity such as construction of games village, stadia, roads, transport, etc., but not for training our sportspersons for the Commonwealth Games... The Committee is of the opinion that the Ministry must create a special corpus for the training of athletes for the Commonwealth Games and other such events," the Parliamentary standing committee for Human Resource Development said in its report examining the demands for grants of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The Committee, headed by Janardan Dwivedi, said it hoped that the Ministry appreciates the high expectations the country has about its performance at the Games to be hosted by New Delhi. It said good showing will also bring a change in perception towards sports in the country and strongly recommended that every effort be made for world class training for the athletes on a regular basis. The Committee noted that major works relating to the Games were yet to begin and according to the Ministry, these were expected to start from June.
The Committee recommended that civil and other works should start at the earliest and completed positively by the end of 2009 so that "our sportspersons have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with facilities/equipment/grounds much in advance."
