Parimarjan Negi for Sigeman tournament

NEW DELHI: Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi will provide the Indian interest when the prestigious Sigeman chess tournament begins at Malmo, Sweden, on April 18.

The 14-year-old Negi is the youngest in the 10-man field that includes three-time winner and defending champion Dutch veteran Jan Timman. In 2005, K. Sasikiran tied for the title with Timman.

To be played on a round-robin format, the nine-round competition features Bulgaria's Ivan Cheparinov as the top seed.

Before leaving for Malmo, the eighth seeded Parimarjan said, "the field will be tougher than the one I faced in Corus `C' (at Wijk ann Zee, near Amsterdam) in January. Since I have played only two players, Erwin L'Ami (the second seed from Holland) and Emanuel Berg (the third seed from Sweden), from this field, I am looking forward to a good learning experience."

Fresh from a three-week training stint under British GM Nigel Short in Athens in March, Parimarjan is looking to gain some rating points from this tough field. He also has a series of strong invitational events lined up in the year ahead.

The players: 1. Ivan Cheparinov (Bulgaria, 2646), 2. Erwin L'Ami (Holland, 2617), 3. Emanuel Berg (Sweden, 2574), 4. Vassilios Kotronias (Greece, 2570), 5. Tiger Hillarp-Persson (Sweden, 2552), 6. Jan Timman (Holland, 2545), 7. Jonny Hector (Sweden, 2537), 8. Parimarjan Negi (India, 2515), 9. Pontus Carlsson (Sweden, 2506), 10. Emil Hermansson (Sweden, 2475).
