Stalin elected Commonwealth panel treasurer

18 MLAs elected executive committee members at meeting held in Chennai

CONGRATULATIONS: Assembly Speaker and president of the Tamil Nadu branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, R Avudaiappan, greeting Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin on his election as treasurer of the Association in Chennai on Monday.

CHENNAI: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin was on Monday unanimously elected treasurer of the Tamil Nadu branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

All MLAs are members of the association on payment of subscription.

The first meeting of the association, after the constitution of the 13th Legislative Assembly, also elected 18 executive committee members — eight from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, two each from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Congress and the Pattali Makkal Katchi and one each from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi.

Speaker R. Avudaiappan, who is ex-officio president of the branch, chaired the meeting. Electricity Minister and senior MLA Arcot N. Veerasamy guided the conduct of the elections. All members were elected unanimously. The Chief Minister, the Leader of the Legislative Assembly and the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly are ex-officio vice-presidents.

Speaking after his election, Mr. Stalin appealed to all MLAs to join the association, which was active in 53 countries and had 169 branches around the world. In India, Parliament and legislatures of the 30 States were members.

The association stood to promote knowledge and education in social, economic, cultural, constitutional and legislative systems within a parliamentary democratic framework with particular reference to the countries outside the Commonwealth having close historical and parliamentary associations with it.
