Cup of surprises

Cup of surprises

The ongoing ICC World Cup has produced many surprises. The early exit of Pakistan and the ouster of India were object lessons to everyone that complacency leads to nothing but downfall. Even the best coaches cannot ensure success in the face of players who take things for granted. There is no substitute for total involvement.

K.D. Viswanaathan,

Nashua (USA)

Accountability

In the light of the debacle of the Indian team at the ICC World Cup, the BCCI must think of appointing an observer for international tournaments who, along with the manager and coach, will assess the performance of each player. It is one thing to put the blame on the coach but accountability is a factor that no player should be allowed to escape.

K.A. Menon,

Palakkad

Why not an Indian?

The BCCI accepted the resignation of coach Greg Chappell but still has sought to keep him as a consultant. When we have stalwarts like S. Venkatraghavan, Sunil Gavaskar, Bishen Bedi, E.A.S. Prasanna and K. Srikkanth to advise and guide the team, why does the Board feel it that it should need the services of a foreigner?

R. Raghavan,

Coimbatore

Well written

The editorial, `End of a mission' (The Hindu, April 9) was a well-written piece. I was also charmed by Nirmal Shekar's Comment (The Hindu, April 4).

Praiseworthy effort

Chitra Magimairaj retained the world ladies billiards title for the second year running but her achievement hardly got noticed. It just shows that no other sport, except cricket, makes news. Chitra has done the country proud and deserves all praise, endorsements and rewards worthy of such a fantastic achievement.
