Floral tributes paid to Ambedkar

REMEMBERING THE LEADER: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi with other leaders paying homage to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on the occasion of his 116th birth anniversary at Parliament House in New Delhi on Saturday.

New Delhi: The nation on Saturday remembered Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on his 116th birth anniversary recounting his contributions as a social reformer, jurist and a constitutional expert.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha L.K. Advani and a host of other personalities paid floral tributes at his statue in Parliament House.

Chief architect

Scores of people queued up outside Parliament since morning to pay homage to the chief architect of the Constitution.

Born on April 14, 1891 in Madhya Pradesh's Mhow town, Dr. Ambedkar spent his life fighting the caste system in Hindu society and is credited with having inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement.

Union Ministers Shivraj Patil, Sushilkumar Shinde, Meira Kumar and P. R. Kyndiah, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Republican Party leader Ramdas Athavale and Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande also paid tributes. — PTI
