LUCKNOW: Lawyers took to the streets and resorted to violence in Allahabad, Lucknow and Varanasi on Friday. They were protesting against the police lathicharge on lawyers during the filing of nominations for the ongoing Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections at Allahabad on Thursday. Principal Secretary (Home), K. Chandramouli told newsmen that a group of lawyers demonstrated outside the Allahabad High Court in Allahabad. Mr. Chadramouli said the agitated lawyers were pacified after the Chief Justice intervened in the matter. However, reports from Allahabad stated that the lawyers resorted to violence and clashed with the police. They were also reported to have damaged some official vehicles. Reports also said that the State Advocate-General, S.M.A. Kazmi suffered minor injuries in his hand while trying to pacify the lawyers and the police personnel. The Home Secretary denied these reports. In Lucknow the irate lawyers came out of the High Court (Lucknow Bench) and the District Court and vented their ire on the vehicles parked near the campus. Mr. Chandramouli said they damaged a car and a van near the court campus. Reports of similar nature were also received from Varanasi.
