THENI:
The bandh call given by political parties, traders and various associations condemning the proposed elimination of Theni constituency by the Delimitation Commission of India evoked a good response here on Friday.
Highways leading to Periyakulam, Cumbum and Madurai, besides other roads, wore a deserted look. All shops and business establishments downed shutters. However, mini buses and autorickshaws were seen plying on the roads.
Cadres of the Congress, traders, lawyers and representatives of various associations participated in the bandh.
If the Government implemented the proposal, Theni constituency would be wiped out from the election map, reducing the total number of constituencies in the district to four, Congress leaders said.
According to them, as per the delimitation panel proposal, Theni constituency would be divided into two segments, to be merged with Bodi and Periyakulam constituencies.
A major portion of the constituency, except Unjampatti and Allinagaram, would be merged with Bodinaickanur. Following inclusion of Kodaikanal taluk in Palani constituency, Allinagaram Municipality and Unjampatti would be attached to Periyakulam Assembly segment to maintain the requisite voter strength. Theni, the district headquarters, would not have a representative in the Assembly.
There is confusion in delimitation of other constituencies in the district as well. There is resentment againt attaching Gudalur near Cumbum with 60 km away Andipatti, they alleged.
