SHANGHAI: Barring Shiv Kapur and Gaurav Ghei, the Indian challenge in the $2 million Volvo China Open was swept away in the high winds that made conditions difficult at the Shanghai Silport Golf Club on Friday. Kapur shot a one-over 73 to be in tied 34th place with a three-over 145, while Ghei was a shot behind at 146 after a second successive 73. Rahil Gangjee missed the cut, which came at 146, after rounds of 76 and 72, while Amandeep Johl was 110-over 152 with two rounds of 76. S.S.P. Chowrasia, 73 overnight, slumped to an 80 on a day when Raphael Jacquelin of France fired a solid four-under-par 67 for a two-stroke lead over Australian Adam Blyth. Meanwhile in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Jeev Milkha Singh opened with an even-par 71 in the Verizon Heritage on Thursday. He played a solid round, with four birdies and four bogeys, to be tied for 35th place. There was disappointment for Daniel Chopra, who, after shooting a one-under 70, was disqualified for signing a wrong card. American Jerry Kelly was in lead with a superb eight-under 63, while Ernie Els put away last week's misery to be on 65 and in second place. Masters champion Zach Johnson was on a 70 for a joint 20th place. In the Nationwide Tour's South Georgia Classic, Arjun Atwal opened his campaign with a one-under 71, which placed him tied for 41st place, seven shots behind leader Paul Dickinson. Agencies
