Sonia flays hate campaign in Mahatma's State

Manas Dasgupta

PORBANDAR: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday flayed the Bharatiya Janata Party Government for taking Mahatma Gandhi's home State in the opposite direction of his cherished dreams.

Unity and harmony were the most essential ingredients for any country to march forward, and hatred and communal intolerance would only eat away its foundations. But the campaign for hatred and communal disharmony enjoyed the support of the BJP Government in Gujarat, she said addressing a public meeting at the birthplace of the Father of the Nation.

It was organised to mark the conclusion of the 537-km cycle rally by the Congress Seva Dal, which started from the Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad on April 1 as part of the centenary celebrations of the Satyagraha movement launched by the Mahatma in South Africa.

Referring to a recent incident in which Gandhiji's posters were defaced at Viramgam, near Ahmedabad, Ms. Gandhi said it was regrettable that the Mahatma had no place in his home State.
