THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan on Tuesday said that the Government is bound to take steps required to maintain supply of essential commodities against the background of the lorry strike. The Chief Minister was talking to the mediapersons after a Cabinet meeting. The strike was not going to change the Government's resolve to carry out the Court order on speed governors. The previous Government had given an undertaking to the Court that the Rule on speed governors would be enforced. The Chief Minister said Mr. Achuthanandan said he had taken up the issue of Russian collaboration for the Vizhijam Project with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his visit to New Delhi last week. The State wanted the Centre to allow a part of the outstanding funds available under the Rupee-Rouble pact between the two countries to be used for the project. He had urged the Centre to enable the States to have its own amendments to the laws dealing with sound pollution so that they would not hinder smooth conduct of local festivals and pyrotechnics. He had also conveyed the concerns of the people of five districts over the safety of the Mullaperiyar dam and sought Centre's assistance for building a new dam in its place. A new dam could ensure continuous supply of water to Tamil Nadu and prevent a disaster. He had called upon Mr. Singh to take measures for the protection of the 27 per cent reservation announced by the Centre for backward classes in educational institutions against court verdicts.
