KOLKATA: Former champion Army XI crashed out of the Indian Oil 112th all-India Beighton Cup hockey tournament after losing to Calcutta Customs 3-1 via the tiebreaker in the pre-quarterfinals at the Mohun Bagan ground here on Tuesday. The win lifted Customs to the quarterfinal league where it joined Sports Authority of India Training Centre, BNR and Punjab Sports Club.
Drab encounter
In a lacklustre encounter, Army XI failed to break through the dogged Customs defence for most part of the game. Local league side, Customs pushed forward to harass the rival defence but did not have the firepower to cause any damage. After a goalless regulation time, tiebreaker was introduced in which Satinder Singh, Sunil Yadav and Shakti Singh were successful for Customs while Avtar Singh was the lone scorer for Army XI. With the completion of the first stage of knockout phase, the tournament would move into the second stage with the quarterfinal league phase beginning on Wednesday. Some of the big names of Indian hockey would be seen in action on Wednesday with Indian Airlines, Indian Oil and defending champion Punjab and Sind Bank making their appearances.
