Guwahati: Stepped up security ahead of a 12-hour bandh called on Wednesday in Assam by the banned ULFA, led to the recovery of a powerful IED near an Army camp in Jorhat district on Tuesday. The timed device, kept in a jar, was found near the Army camp at Bhalukmora, officials said. The improvised explosive device was defused and no one was injured. Strict security arrangements have has been put in place. Patrolling along highways and bridges has been stepped up and additional security personnel have been deployed at vital installations. The ULFA has called a bandh from 6 a.m. to protest the arrest on March 30 of the wives of its "missing" cadres while they were on a fast here. The women are currently in the Guwahati Medical College Hospital. ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, in a statement e-mailed to the media, said the bandh had been called to protest the ``inhuman treatment meted out to the women who had launched a democratic protest demanding information about their husbands''. Emergency services such as water supply, milk, healthcare, electricity and media will be exempted from the purview of the bandh, Rajkhowa said. The wives of ULFA leaders Benning Rabha, Amulya Chakraborty, Asanta Baghphukan and three other cadres launched an indefinite fast on March 21 to demand information about their husbands, who they claimed were missing since the operations against the ULFA by the Royal Bhutan Army in 2003. - PTI
