Collect data on orphans, local bodies told

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Union Women and Child Development Ministry has asked the State Governments to involve panchayats and other local bodies to identify orphan and destitute children so that they can be provided proper care and placed for adoption.

Launching the re-designed website of the Central Adoption resource Agency (CARA) here on Tuesday, Union Minister of State (Independent charge) Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury said the work had already been started to simplify and streamline adoption procedure and it make it more transparent.

She said the Government had planned a comprehensive Integrated Child Protection Scheme for the development and welfare of the children. Adoption could also contribute in these efforts by providing family care and homely environment to the destitute children.

The website has been redesigned to provide adequate information to all associated agencies and prospective adoptive parents.

It contains guidelines on adoption, provides link to procedure to be followed in case of in-country and inter-country adoption separately, and action plan for the year 2007-08.

In addition, the updated list of recognised placement agencies in India and foreign agencies enlisted by CARA is also available on the website.
