CHENNAI: The State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) has formed a special purpose vehicle to supply recycled water from sewage to industrial units located at Irungattukottai and Sriperumbudur. It is called the Chennai Industrial Water Utility Company. "It has been proposed to establish a 20-million-litres-a-day treatment and distribution facility at a cost of Rs. 90 crore," according to the SIPCOT's annual report, placed on the table of the Assembly on Monday. The company will augment water supply to industrial units in the two areas. The Corporation will be actively involved in the formation of a special economic zone in Sriperumbudur to be promoted with two multinational companies, Foxconn and Motorola. SIPCOT allotted 100 acres for the Rs. 495-crore project of Foxconn, which will set up a manufacturing facility for electronic products, providing employment to about 10,000 persons . Motorola was setting up a manufacturing facility for cellular mobile, wireless infrastructure equipment lines and two-way radios, with an investment of about Rs. 260.35 crore. The project can provide employment to about 8,000 persons. Seventy acres of land has been allotted.
Footwear park
The Corporation's involvement with an exclusive footwear park project at the SIPCOT industrial park in Irungattukottai will continue. Estimated to cost around Rs. 40 crore, the park was being established over an area of about 155 acres. The Union Government was extending an assistance of Rs. 14 crore for it. SIPCOT is seeking to set up a multi-product SEZ at Ennore on an area of 2,650 acres, the annual report stated. In conformity with environmental norms, the Corporation has earmarked 26 acres of land at Gummidipoondi, on the northern outskirts of the city, for storage, treatment and disposal of hazardous wastes generated by industrial units at its complex. Initial work had started. Another site in and around Chennai has also been identified for the purpose, the report added.
