CHENNAI: The wearing of "protective head gear" by two-wheeler riders and pillion riders has been made compulsory in Chennai from June 1, under Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

A press release issued here on Monday said a G.O., MS number 292 dated February 22, had been issued. According to Section 129, the helmet should conform to the norms set by the Bureau of Indian Standards.

It should be fastened securely to the head.

Any violation is punishable under Section 177 of the M.V. Act and is compoundable. A first-time offence will attract a fine of up to Rs. 100, while subsequent offences will attract up to Rs. 300.
