CHENNAI: Madras High Court Judge Prabha Sridevan on Monday urged students to pursue excellence and not power or wealth.

In her convocation address at the Guru Nanak College, she called upon the graduates to ensure that their work was never mediocre.

As for education, "degrees are tools for achieving internal progress," she said.

Justice Prabha Sridevan reminded them about Mahatma Gandhi's famous `talisman': recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you have seen to ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him.

The goal of education, she said, was in the realisation of right and wrong and contributing back to society. There lies the real fortune.

"Never mind the Ambanis. We are also on the Fortune list," she quipped, referring to the powers of education that builds character and thus, the nation.

"If education has to have a meaning, then be catalysts of change," she said.

Later, she honoured university rank holders from the undergraduate and postgraduate streams.

More than 700 students (day and evening college) were awarded degrees.
