Plant 10 saplings for each felled tree, court tells NHAI

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed Central and State government agencies to plant saplings on the 100-km stretch between Pallikonda and Krishnagiri at the rate of 10 for each felled tree.

A Division Bench, comprising Justice Dharma Rao Elipe and Justice K. Chandru, was passing orders on a public interest litigation filed by S. Gnaneswaran, who claimed that about 50,000 trees had been felled for widening National Highway 46.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) clarified only 6,815 trees had been felled. It said two-metre high super advanced saplings would be planted once the project reached an advanced stage.

It said contracts for the package had been awarded. The terms included providing mild steel tree guards, watering and weeding and replacement of withered plants. Once NHAI took over the road maintenance, its Corridor Management Division would take care of the plants and hedges. The Bench, referring to similar proceedings, which led to the formation of an expert committee to suggest remedial measures whenever trees were felled to widen roads, said NHAI should plant fairly grown up saplings in the present case. It shall protect the saplings from vandalism.
