GAIL draws up major plans

Sujay Mehdudia

NEW DELHI: Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) has embarked on an ambitious plan to make investments and expand its asset base in India and abroad by entering into joint ventures in China, Egypt, Russia, African continent and Central Asian Republics.

At the same time, it is looking at the enormous scope for development of coal bed methane (CBM), especially in China. The company has already entered into an alliance with China Gas Holdings for city gas distribution projects and other such ventures in China and India.

It is learnt that GAIL has also entered into partnerships with Arrow Energy, Australia, and Energy Infrastructure Group, Sweden, for cooperation in CBM opportunities in India, Australia and other countries.

Apart from its equity participation in three retail gas companies in Egypt and in China Gas Holdings, participating interest in offshore blocks in Myanmar and one on-land block in Oman, GAIL is pursuing business opportunities in Southeast Asia, West Asia, Russia, Central Asian Republics and African Continent in the areas of exploration and production, gas transmission, CNG and city gas distribution, LNG and petrochemicals. It has also set up a wholly owned subsidiary company, GAIL Global (Singapore) Pte Limited, in Singapore for this purpose.

However, GAIL's attempts to expand its gas network suffered a serious setback when the Myanmar authorities decided to opt for China to lay the pipeline for supply of natural gas instead of going with India.
