TAMBARAM: Students of the Madras Institute of Technology in Chromepet played hosts to more than 250 children of orphanages on Monday, entertaining them, conducting fun games and serving food.

The children from the orphanages displayed their skills in dance, mimicry and singing during the event named `Charisma 07.' The festival was organised for the first time and students plan to make it an annual affair. Playback singer Deepan Chakravarthy was the chief guest.

Students recalled that NSS volunteers from the institution camped in Palur village near Chengalpattu in July last and were moved by the plight of meritorious students unable to pursue higher studies owing to their economic status. It was then that they started the "MIT Trust."

Initially, about 300 members joined the Trust, contributing Rs.10 a month.

The amount was used to help meritorious students belonging to economically weaker sections. The membership of the Trust is around 1,500 now. A team of office-bearers would visit orphanages and prepare of list of things it needed. A portion of the Trust's funds would be used to buy essential items for the orphanages.

On an appointed day, a team of students would visit the orphanages and spend the day with the children.

Students said they would soon register the Trust and extend financial assistance to underprivileged meritorious students.
