Women empowerment stressed

    VIJAYAWADA: City Police Commissioner C.V. Anand felicitated women working in the city police commissionerate, at a special function organised to celebrate the International Women's Day, here on Thursday.

    A panel of judges comprising of officials selected sub-inspector Sahera Begum, constable Ravuri Sujatha, home guard Indira Mahalakshmi and clerk J. Padma for the felicitation. While Ms. Begum was away from the city on duty, the others received a memento, letter of appreciation and Rs. 1,000 cash prize each from Mr. Anand at a programme held at the commissionerate.

    Financial support

    Underlining the need for women empowerment, Mr. Anand said that financial support from women would help families to improve their social status, which would ultimately lead to their social and political development. Besides the Women's Day, the commissionerate would also celebrate World AIDS Day and Friendship Day, he said. Deputy Commissioner of Police U.V.S. Raju and other officials were present.

    Krishna district Collector Navin Mittal speaking at a function organised under the Indiramma Kranthi Patham banner at Tummalapallivari Kshetrayya Kalakshetram said that bank linkage to the tune of Rs. 175 crore would be provided to women self-help groups in the next financial year.

    Earlier, Mr. Mittal flagged-off a rally organised by Social Service Centre at Kakatiya Public School in Maruthi Nagar.

    Municipal Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar's wife Lakshmi inaugurated the Women's Day celebrations organised by the VMC in the general body meeting hall. City Mayor Mallika Begum, deputy Mayor Anne Prasanna, women corporators and staff working in the VMC participated in the celebrations.

    At the Women's Day celebrations organised by the Vijayawada division of the South Central Railway Mazdoor Union, sub-inspector K. Chandraleela, advocate G. Nirmal Latha and corporator M.V. Ratna Bindu advised women to focus on empowerment.

    Vice-Chairperson of Krishna ZP T. Padmavathi spoke on `women empowerment,' while project director of Integrated Child Development Scheme M.J. Nirmala spoke on `violence against women' at a programme organised by Humanities Association of Sri Durga Malleswara Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala. Director of Correspondent of Montessori Educational Institutions V. Koteswaramma was the chief guest at the Women's Day celebrations at Montessori Mahila Kalasala. Amnesty International and Forum For Child Rights conducted a candle light rally at Lenin centre.
