Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The 2007 Nayaki Award of Excellence was conferred on Sangeetha Kalanidhi T.K. Govinda Rao by N. Murali, president of the Music Academy and Managing Director of The Hindu , at a function organised by Nayaki, a cultural association, at Kotturpuram on Saturday.

Inaugurating the 12th annual music festival, Mr. Murali highlighted the contribution made by M.A. Chidambaram and A.C. Muthiah and his family members to promoting Carnatic music and Tamil Isai in particular. He spoke of how neighbourhood cultural organisations such as Nayaki rendered yeoman service to Carnatic music by organising music festivals besides honouring senior artists. Within a span of 12 years, Nayaki had secured a special place in the cultural space of Chennai, he said.

He also released a compact disc on Thirupugazh sung by Sudha Raghunathan. The first copy was handed over to industrialist A.C. Muthiah.

Devaki Muthiah, president of Nayakai, outlined the activities of the organisation since its inception in 1994.

Sulochana Kannan, member of Nayaki, electronically switched on the deepam in two traditional lamps to mark the commissioning of the new auditorium at the Abirami Chidambaram Community Hall, where the festival will be on till March 4.
