CHENNAI: The Indian media had failed to work out a code of practice and evolve a form of self-regulation for itself, N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu , said on Saturday. Internal regulation, such as that done by an ombudsman, in a newspaper was not sufficient. While regulation by an external authority would not be welcome, there was need for self-regulation by the media industry at large, Mr. Ram said. He was speaking at a session on "Quality Standards in Media," organised by the National Institution for Quality and Reliability, at its 12th national convention. Echoing the concern by media organisations in the SAARC nations about `dumbing down,' he said different arguments were put forth to "attract people" and increase numbers. The tasks to ensure quality included ensuring accountability and chalking out a path of social responsibility for media organisations.
Personal journey
Actor Revathy spoke about her personal journey as a film artist and socially committed individual. While the decision to ensure quality was personal, media organisations must exercise restraint while executing their tasks, she said. At a function later, N. Kumar, vice-chairman, Sanmar group of companies, gave away awards to quality achievers. The NIQR-Bajaj Auto Award for Outstanding Quality Man went to N. Ravichandran, president, Lucas TVS, Chennai. Mahindra and Mahindra, Mumbai, took the NIQR-GKD Award for Outstanding Organisation. Aditya Auto Products and Engineering, Bangalore, took the NIQR-SUSIRA Award for Outstanding Small Scale Industry. Kongu Engineering College, Erode, bagged the NIQR-TVN Kidao Award for Outstanding Educational Institution. Saranya Ramanathan, student of Velammal College, was given the NIQR-T.S.Krishna Award for Outstanding Student.Vandana and Vaishnavi, founders of the Banyan took the NIQR-Lucas TVS Award for Outstanding Service Organisation.
