CHENNAI : Neuro-developmental assessment services for early detection of development delays in low birth weight babies are being extended to more areas in the city under the auspices of The Perinatal Research Foundation in Vadapalani. The Foundation at present has three teams headed by neonatologist and paediatrician S. Jayam providing services in Vadapalani, Thiruvanmiyur and Taramani. The plan is to reach the facility to tsunami-affected and remote areas of the city. According to Dr. Jayam, early assessment and detecting of development delays and corrective intervention can help children reach near-normal potential. Sahishnatha Trust helps the Foundation conduct regular assessment camps for the underprivileged. The State Bank of India recently provided funds to support the cause under its Community Services Banking Scheme. Bhoopalan Mudaliar, DGM, SBI's Chennai Main Branch, handed over a cheque to Dr. Jayam. Sujatha Mohan, paediatrician of the Trust at Vijaya Hospital, Smeeta Rani and Chaitanya, paediatric physiotherapists spoke. The Foundation functioning at Vijaya Institute of Child Health, Vadapalani, can be contacted at 24424950/24802221.
