Mohun Bagan registers victory

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan registered its first victory in the ONGC National Football League under its new coach, Chima Okorie, and at the receiving end was Mohammedan Sporting. The 88th minute strike by substitute Dipendu Biswas proved to be the match-winner after the Sporting players did all the hard work to dominate the show.

The fifth meeting of the league for both was so important, especially for the Federation Cup champion. Touted as the `Dream Team' of the NFL, Mohun Bagan tasted everything but a victory. As luck would have it Mohammedan Sporting came close to scoring twice during the period of ascendancy but failed to strike. On the 11th minute its Malaysian recruit Preston Papai Corporal put the ball in but the referee pulled him up for a foul on Mohun Bagan stopper Deepak Mondal.

Seven minutes later Mondal made a hash of a defensive clearance and that chance too went waste.

Mohun Bagan skipper Jose Ramirez Barreto too proved to be a culprit later in the game messing up two chances. First he failed to control a good pass from Pachau Lalam Puia and later directed his firm header away.

At the end of the fifth round, Mohun Bagan, still languishing at the bottom of the table, was on four points while Sporting was on five occupying the eighth spot overall.
