Mahindra beats Air-India

Mumbai: Reigning champion Mahindra United regained top spot in the National Football League when it got the better of Air-India by a solitary goal here on Friday.

The victory at the Cooperage ground was achieved with a disciplined backline and a creative midfield as central defender N.P. Pradeep scored the winner at the hour mark. It lifted Mahindra to the top of the league standings with 11 points.

Mahindras not only dominated the exchanges but also created clear-cut openings.

Unable to convert the pressure into goals in the first half, Mahindra finally broke the deadlock through a set-piece situation early after change of ends.

Following a flag-kick from substitute Steven Dias, man of the match Pradeep, who also had a superb game in the heart of the defence, showed great control to meet the ball early and find the target with a header at the near post.

This win was crucial for Mahindra as it appeared to be losing ground with ordinary results in its previous two matches. — PTI
