India needs to improve its fielding, says Yuvraj Singh

Special Correspondent

BEST WISHES: Yuvraj Singh at the Good Luck India signature campaign in Kolkata on Friday.

KOLKATA: Back in the Indian squad with a bang after a debilitating knee injury, Yuvraj Singh is a more confident man than ever. After having done well against Sri Lanka in the just concluded series, the stylish left-hander pinpointed the problem areas the Indian team suffer from.

"Yes, it is the fielding that needs to be improved,'' he told reporters on Friday while being part of the `Good Luck India'' signature campaign for the ICC cricket World Cup 2007.

"We are working hard on our fielding and I am sure we will do well in the World Cup.''

Morale-booster

The Punjab left-hander said India's series win against the West Indies and Sri Lanka had added to the confidence of the side before the all-important assignment in the West Indies.

"The two series victories have given the Indian team a lot of confidence,'' he said.

When pointed out India's defeat against the West Indies last year, he said the Indian team had made some mistakes which did not help the side at all. "We cannot repeat those mistakes. We will have to learn from those errors,'' he said.

Good fielders

Yuvraj said the team was a mix of youth and experience and had a number of good fielders like Robin Uthappa and Dinesh Karthik.

He played the last two matches against Sri Lanka and scored 21 and 95. "I think I played well in the last match. That gave me a lot of confidence. I am quite happy the way I progressed after the injury induced break,'' he said.

Yuvraj was all praise for his mentor and former captain, Sourav Ganguly terming his comeback as "good for the Indian team.'' He said he was quite hopeful about Ganguly playing a crucial role at the top of the order.

Answering a question on which team could win the cup, Yuvraj said Australia might be down for the time being but "cannot be underestimated.'' He rated South Africa on the higher side as a one-day side and did not rule out a good showing from Pakistan as well.
