Maran sets target for BSNL

Staff Reporter

`Should focus on all required parameters'

NEW DELHI: Communications and Information Technology Minister Dayanidhi Maran has asked senior Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) officials to double its turnover to reach $ 20 billion in the next three years, targeting an annual increase of 27 per cent.

Addressing the concluding session of the "Heads of telecom circle conference" here on Thursday, Mr. Maran set ambitious targets for the state-owned telecom giant that included an average of five-lakh broadband new connections a month from January 2008 and an average of three million new GSM mobile subscribers a month between January 2008 and December 2010. Stating that BSNL needs to create innovative business models for converting the STD and ISD PCO booths into broadband kiosks as "One Stop" centres for all services, Mr. Maran said 2007 had been declared as the "Year of Broadband", hence BSNL that has the maximum geographical presence in the country needed to leverage its wide presence and attract more users towards its various telecom services.

The Minister further said BSNL should focus on all required parameters to ensure "Navratna" status within next one year. He called upon all officials to prepare a multiple rollout plan for wireless broadband with various plans including revenue sharing.

Mr. Maran also said efforts should be made for network upgradation and for capacity-building. With a view to bringing attitudinal changes in the employees, especially in the field, which is interfaced with the consumers, every "secondary switching area" should strive for ISO 9000 Certification, he added.
