Alcatel-Lucent conducts field trial of WiMax

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Global IT player Alcatel-Lucent has said it has successfully completed the country's first live Worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMax) field trial that enables voice and broadband connectivity for fixed and mobile phones.

The field trials were conducted at the Chennai-based C-DoT Alcatel-Lucent Research Centre (CARC) by using Aircel's licensed spectrum. After the trials, the technology is ready for commercial deployment, the company said in a statement.

The trials were conducted using the 2.5 GHz band and successfully demonstrated applications in moving conditions like video streaming, high-speed file downloads, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and web browsing.

"WiMAX technology is likely to become a widely used high-speed Internet access technology. Alcatel-Lucent's WiMAX solutions and their capability to offer higher output are poised to address service providers' challenges to offer reliable broadband services bundled with VoIP," said Aircel's CEO Jagdish Kini.
