Corrections and Clarifications

  • In "[Chennai] Police heave a sigh of relief" (Chennai city edition, February 19, 2007, page 4), a report on the local body elections in the city, the NCP was incorrectly referred to as the National Congress Party. It should have been the Nationalist Congress Party, as explained in an earlier correction.

  • The February 14 agreement, a reference to the accord between the United States and Korea ("A welcome agreement", Editorial, February 15, 2007) should have been the February 13 agreement.

  • In a report "Iran stoking Iraq militancy: U.S." ("International" page, February 12, 2007), it was stated that it was the 25th anniversary of Iran's Islamic Revolution. It should have been the 28th anniversary.

  • In a Xinhua report "Rare bacteria detected" ("International" page, February 13, 2007), the first sentence was "Traces of a bacteria that causes a rare disease ... ', while the second sentence was "The bacteria that causes tularemia ... .' The reference to bacteria was in the singular. "Bacteria" is the plural form of "bacterium". Hence, the first two sentences should have been: "Traces of a bacterium that causes a rare disease ... " and "The bacterium that causes tularemia ... ."

  • In a column "The new world of fan-dom" ("Sport", February 16, 2007), it was stated that Italy is ranked No.1 by FIFA. A reader says that though Italy won the World Cup, it is still Brazil that is ranked No.1 by FIFA. The Sports Desk clarifies that in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola rankings (February 14), Italy has taken the No. 1 spot, displacing Brazil. Italy has regained the top spot after a gap of 13 years, 2 months and 27 days, as in the FIFA website.
