Butta, Randhawa in semifinals

Sports Reporter

Coimbatore: Akshay Butta of Kolkata wriggled his way out from a rather tight spot to upset top seed Abhishek Jha on the second play-off hole in the quarterfinals of the 106th Royal Challenge all India amateur golf championship at the par-72 Coimbatore Golf Club course in Chettipalayam, near here on Friday.

Local hope Joseph Chakola was also shown the door out by Delhi's Raj Randhawa on the second play-off hole. Joining Butta and Randhawa in the last four were three-time Sri Lankan amateur champion Simarjeet Singh and K. Prabagaran of Sri Lanka.

Simarjeet had no difficulty in dispatching Delhi's Vikram Rana 2&1 and Prabagaran shattered the hope of South African Ruan Botha 1-up.

The results (quarterfinals): Simarjeet Singh bt Vikram Rana 2&1, Akshay Butta bt Abhiskek Jha (20th hole), Raj Randhawa bt Joseph Chakola (20th hole), K Prabagaran bt Ruan Botha 1-up.
