Mixed day for Tamil Nadu

Guwahati : Tamil Nadu had a mixed day as the semifinal line-up of the basketball event of the National Games was confirmed at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi indoor stadium here on Friday.

While Tamil Nadu men crashed out after suffering a heavy 83-52 loss to National champion Services in Pool B, its women easily cruised into the round of last four defeating Kerala comfortably 84-39 and thus topping Pool B.

In Pool A of the men's section, Punjab emerged on top of the four-team group by holding back the challenge from host Assam 77-71. The defeat for the home side also paved the way for the entry of Uttaranchal into the semifinals as the Pool runner-up. Uttaranchal had prevailed over Karnataka 77-71 in the morning.

Crushing win

Chhattisgarh was the other side to make the grade on Friday, the crushing 103-56 win over Punjab helping the side to finish second in women's Pool B.

The semifinals are to be played on Saturday morning and the losers' final in the evening. In the men's section, Punjab will cross swords with Services in the first semifinal while Kerala will meet Uttaranchal.

And in women's action, Tamil Nadu is pitted against Delhi and Chhattisgarh against Maharashtra.

The results (preliminary league): Men:

Pool A: Punjab 75 (Yadveender Singh 19, Mandeep Singh 15, Gagandeep Singh 13) bt Assam 70 (Shiv Kumar 34, Birender Singh 24); Uttaranchal 77 (Desraj 22, Sridhar 17, Muralikrishna 14) bt Karnataka 71 (Srinivasa Gowda 18, Srinivas Naik 13, Kaushabh 10).

Pool B: Services 83 (Arokya Babu 22, Jai Ram 12, A.P. Singh 11) bt Tamil Nadu 52 (R. Chandrasekharan 14, C.V. Dinesh 10).

Women: Pool A: Maharashtra 76 (Lincy Joseph 14, Manisha 13, Shanti Saldana 11, S. Indu 10) bt Delhi 68 (Asha Hegde 23, Sheeba Magoon 20, Harjeet Kaur 11, Preeti Singh 10); Madhya Pradesh 66 (Surpreet Kaur 21, Nanda Jain 20) bt Assam 30 (B. Bobby 10, Mitali Das 10).

Pool B: Tamil Nadu 84 (Geethu Anna Jose 38, N. Shyamala 13, Sunita Suren 12) bt Kerala 39 (Cini Jose 12, Renjusha Mathew 10); Chattisgarh 103 (Bharati Netam 25, Anju Lakra 25, Navaneet Kaur 11, Seema Singh 10) bt Punjab 56 (Kiranjeet Kaur 17, Harminder Kaur 10).
