Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council on Wednesday adopted a Shariat Bill to apply the Muslim Personal Law in the State. It was already passed by the Assembly. The Indian Shariat Act, 1937, which applies the law to Muslims in the rest of the country, has not been applicable to this State so far.
To eliminate duplicity
The Bill aims at uniform application of the law, as in the rest of the country, to eliminate duplicity created by the prevalence of customary laws in some areas. On questions of succession, inheritance, special property for women, marriage, divorce, adoption, guardianship, family relations, will, legacies, gifts, wakf, partitions, caste or any religious usage or institution, the rules of decision shall be the Muhammedan law except where it has been abolished or modified by any custom applicable to the parties concerned, which is not contrary to justice, equity and good conscience.
Baglihar verdict
Thumping desks, members hailed the verdict of the Swiss neutral expert Raymond Lafitte on the Baglihar dam. They urged the Government to expedite the construction of the dam for overcoming power shortage. Making a statement, Power Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora said the overall design of the dam was upheld.
