Ensure prompt payment of dues to primary milk producers: U. Mathivanan

TIRUCHI : The Tamil Nadu State Milk Producers' Federation will release assistance to the tune of Rs. 5 crore to the Tiruchi District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union for disbursement of arrears to the primary milk producers' societies in the region, according to the Dairy Development Minister, U. Mathivanan.

He was addressing a meeting to review the functioning of the `Aavin' in the region having jurisdiction over Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur and part of Pudukottai districts here recently.

While assessing the financial condition of the union, he directed the officials to ensure prompt payment of dues to the primary milk producers.

The State Federation's gesture is expected to give a fillip to the 654 primary milk societies attached to the union in the region and augment milk production. Payment is long overdue to 282 societies.

The fund is expected to be received shortly and the assistance forms part of the union's multi-pronged strategy to give a fillip to milk production in the region, according to the Managing Director, Aavin, A. Balasubramnainan.

The union would soon form 50 new societies comprising women members of self-help groups, he said adding that it would ensure an assured procurement of milk produced by women members of SHGs in Tiruchi, Perambalur and Karur districts. The daily chilling capacity of four plants in the region would be increased to 5.5 lakh litres, from 3.3 lakh litres, at a cost of Rs. 2 crore.

The expansion works, which have begun, would be completed before December, he said.

The `Aavin' would set up milk parlours at three railway stations.

While five parlours would be set up at Tiruchi junction, one each would come up at Ariyalur and Ponmalai.

It would double its monthly `khoa' production from three tonnes.
