Remission of sentences for prisoners

Special Correspondent

V.S. Achuthanandan says meet will discuss imposition of ban on fireworks in festivals.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to recommend to the Governor remission of sentences of prisoners for varying periods in connection with the golden jubilee of State formation.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told the media that remissions ranging from 15 days for those sentenced for three months to two years for life-timers had been proposed.

The Chief Minister said a meeting would be held to discuss a court order for imposition of a ban on use of fireworks and noisy instruments at religious festivals. All concerned would be invited to the talks with a view to finding a solution to the issue.

Steps would be taken for procurement of paddy from Thrissur kole lands in association with polder committees and farmers' societies. The State Civil Supplies Corporation will do the procurement.

Asked about the demand of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church for a judicial probe into the police lathicharge on the faithful who participated in a protest march on Tuesday, the Chief Minister said the Inspector-General of Police (South) had been asked to inquire into it and report on the incident. Further action would be decided after receipt of the report.

To a question on Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan's allegation that a media syndicate was working against the party in the State, Mr. Achuthanandan said journalists should discuss the issue with those concerned and know the facts for themselves. Asked if the Government was willing to order an inquiry, he said the matter could be examined if journalists made a formal request.
