TIRUCHI : An awareness programme on Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) for the benefit of Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel was held at the Basic Training School in the Goldenrock workshop here recently. The programme was organised by the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Trust, Tiruchi. The secretary of the trust and child specialist, V.M. Gnanavelu, and the district Maternal Child Health Officers, Jahita and Padmavathy, explained in AIDS, how to protect oneself, the prevention and treatment aspects, its causes and the AIDS-related diseases to the participants. Issues connected with it such as safe sex and how HIV is transmitted from an infected woman to her child during pregnancy, the Anti Retroviral treatment, and the need to maintain a healthy life-style were also underscored to the RPF men during the programme. The organisers arranged a documentary show on AIDS to percolate the message to the participants. The speakers clarified queries raised by the participants.
