Global warming

The editorial `A climate change warning' (Feb. 10) is timely. Various orientation programmes are needed to educate the people about the impact of the grave threat posed by global warming. There are many reasons that can be blamed for the crisis. The various types of pollution are only some of them. A nature-friendly world is what is required.

K. Pramod Krishnan,
Mavelikkara, Kerala

Global warming is turning out to be the greatest threat to the world. More importantly, no nation can deal with the problem single-handedly. The only way out is for all countries of the world to work together and impose strict measures. The passive role of the United States in the face of such a serious problem is surprising.
Aneesh Bhandari,

The alarm bells are ringing loud and clear but few developed countries view the problem with the seriousness it deserves. Worse, they are increasing industrial pollution. Will a solution come only after irreparable damage has been done?

This refers to the article `Climate change and global leadership' (Feb. 10). In the domestic context, the naysayers to the Indo-U.S. civilian nuclear pact should realise that climate change is an impending catastrophe rather than the result of scientific propaganda. Further, those who feel that industrialisation alone is the panacea for India's backwardness should understand that pursuing it without taking into consideration the environment can cause havoc. If all we want is a galloping GDP, we should be prepared to face the consequence.

Debasis Mohapatra,
New Delhi

While appreciating the logic espoused by Mr. Thakur and Mr. Bradford, I was a little taken aback by the proposed constitution of the L14 advocating inclusion of an Islamic country. Whence religion-based classification in this debate? These accommodations to religious sentiments are what Richard Dawkins has railed against in his book The God Delusion.

Raghuram Ekambaram,
New Delhi
