Abolishes permit-free training for overseas doctors, mainly Indians

LONDON: With the careers of 15,000 Indian doctors and medical students in the United Kingdom hanging in the balance, an association on Saturday said it would file an appeal in court to seek a stay on a new immigration law abolishing permit-free training for overseas doctors, mainly Indians.

Ramesh Mehta, president, British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, said: "We have decided to file an appeal in the Appeals Court on Monday against the judgment of the High Court and seek a stay order on the new regulation."

The High Court judge, while declining to quash the new law, had on Friday assured the association, the main appellant, that the appeal would be heard as soon as possible.

"We are trying to bring a stay order on the new regulation. Until our appeal is heard, all affected Indian doctors will be treated equally to local doctors," Mr. Mehta said. — PTI
