Letters to the Editor
I was surprised to know that it is not compulsory for judges of the Supreme Court and the High Courts to declare their wealth and assets annually. Another surprise is the Chief Justice's statement that "if you are very strict and it is compulsory no self-respecting person will accept." Transparency cannot be related to self-respect.
Shamimuddin Ansari,
* * * I cannot understand why judges should not be asked to declare their assets. The image of judges will be enhanced and it will boost the confidence of the public in the judiciary, if they do so.
K. Giridhar,
* * * The judiciary in India is going through a rough phase because of fast-changing political and economic dynamics. I hope the judiciary will retain its glory.
