ADDING TO THEIR MISERY: The slow progress of the drainage scheme on Demellows Road in Choolai is causing hardship to the road-users. PHOTO: V. Ganesan
CHENNAI : The delay in executing pipe-laying work on Demellows Road in Choolai is creating traffic bottlenecks for the road-users. Recently, the Chennai Metrowater Supply and Sewerage Board started work on developing drainage system for a small stretch, which lacked drainage facility. The slow pace of drainage construction work has resulted in a pileup of traffic on one side of the road. Haphazard parking of vehicles on the road margins is compounding the traffic problem here. A Metrowater official attributed the delay in permission for digging works to the reluctance of Traffic Police to allow impediments on the arterial Demellows Road. The police wanted the Metrowater authorities to dig the road only during the night to minimise hindrance to daytime traffic. Another factor that slowed down the work was shortage of sewer pipes, he added. He said construction of manholes has been completed and the entire work will be over within a short period. The official also pointed to the disadvantage of digging the road during night time in terms of the number of telephone and electricity underground lines that get damaged during the digging exercise. While the residents are not opposed to development works, they want closer coordination among government agencies to minimise hardship for the people on account of the execution of schemes.
