All-India ladies amateur golf championship

NEW DELHI: The 90th all-India ladies amateur golf championship will offer Indian youngsters a chance to prove themselves with a dash of foreign competition also adding spice to the competition, at the Delhi Golf Club course here over the next six days.

The two-day stroke-play followed by four-day match-play event tees off on Tuesday with a 14-member Zimbabwean team making it to the prestigious tournament for the first time.

Jessie Nyakatawa, who is also the president of the Zimbabwean Ladies Golf Union, Alex Bell and Tessa Covell will lead the Zimbabwean challenge against India for the Agarwal International trophy. Jessie has a handicap of -5 while the other two are -7 handicappers.

There are 31 entries in the open handicap (0-12) and will play two days of stroke-play golf to qualify for the 16 spots in the match-play competition.

In the handicap category 13-24, there are maximum 55 entries where the competition actually gets tough for the youngsters.

The lone entry from Sri Lanka, Maleena Maryam Awn, will feature in the silver category (13-24).

Apart from the vastly experienced Shruti, who won three of the eight regional titles in the season, teenagers Meghna Bal and Vaishavi Sinha, both having represented India at the Doha Asian Games, and Laverry Kumar and Nalini Singh will be taking part. — Principal Correspondent
