BANGKOK: Thailand's National Police Commissioner-General Pol. Gen. Kowit Watana has been removed, local media reported on Monday. The news network The Nation said on its website that Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont signed an order on Monday to transfer Gen. Kowit to the Prime Minister's Office, and appointed Pol. Gen. Seripisut Temiyawes, an adviser attached to the Royal Thai Police, as acting police chief. The order took immediate effect, the report said. Since the New Year's Eve bombings in Bangkok and its suburbs which killed three persons and injured 40 others, Gen. Kowit has been under pressure to quit. Xinhua
